A
Civil War Round Table is an organization structured to promote and further stimulate
interest in that "defining moment in our Nation's history"
known as the American Civil War. Members share a common interest in the period
and have a desire to promote patriotism and fellowship among those interested in preserving our nation's heritage.
The Union Library Civil War Round Table (ULCWRT) meets at the Union Library, 243 S.
York Road, Hatboro, PA, on the third Wednesday of each month to openly discuss topics
related to the period. We also invite guest speakers and exhibitors, work to preserve
battlefields or historically relevant places of interest, act as an information resource for
area schools and civic associations, tour Civil War sites to expand our knowledge and
understanding of the events surrounding this time in our history, engage in other
activities of interest to our members, and generally have a good time. While participants
are referred to as "Members," all ULCWRT meetings
held at the Union Library are open to the public.
To join the Union Library Civil War Round Table the cost of membership is $20 which is
split $15/$5, with $15 being used to purchase a share in the Union Library Company of
Hatborough for the new Member and with the remaining $5 going to the Round Table. In
each subsequent year the cost remains $20 but it is collected in two stages. First, as a
"Library Shareholder" each Round Table Member is directly solicited by the Library
for a $10 contribution during the Library's annual November fund drive. While this
contribution is voluntary, since we only exist through the Library's generosity, we
strongly urge all Round Table Members to support them at this time. Second, Members
are asked for $10 to renew their Round Table membership during the month in which they initially joined.
First Year (Initial Membership) $15 Purchases the Member one (1) share in the Union
Library Company of Hatborough $5 Supports The Union Library Civil War Round Table
Subsequent Years The Union Library solicits a $10 contribution directly by mail from
each Shareholder each November $10 is paid by each Member directly to the Round Table during the Member's
anniversary month
As indicated in our logo, the Hatborough Union Library was founded in 1755 and, while
the building was not standing at that time George Washington made his headquarters at
the village of Crooked Billet, which was the name of Hatboro Township the time, in 1848
it stood ready to witness the passage of the 104th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry as
they marched down Old York Road from Doylestown toward training camps and embarkation points in
Philadelphia. Perhaps it served as a recruiting site for local citizens who
filled elements of the 138th PVI in Norristown, or to serve in the Union Navy or staff
any one of over 100 other artillery, cavalry, or infantry regiments which the Commonwealth assembled during the war. Quite possibly
both freedmen and escaped slaves, passed by the Library as they answered their Nation's call and walked or rode to
the Union Army's first Volunteer Infantry Training (Colored) facility at Camp William
Penn, which was located here in Montgomery County off Cheltenham Avenue. But it
most surely stood as the Veterans of this war, alive and whole, or wounded and broken,
passed by on their return to homes and families throughout the area. Equally as likely, it
stood as a silent witness as the remains of our honored dead passed by on the way to
their final resting place in many of the area's cemeteries.
So, if you yearn to learn more about our Nation's rich history and recognize
how the American Civil War continues to influence us over 140 years after the fighting stopped,
then bring a chair because seating is limited, and sit back and join with us as our
adventure unfolds. You will not return unchanged!!!!
