United States forces in the Civil War, preceding the 12 April 1861 firing
on Fort Sumpter by over 3 months. |

issue: 10 May 1865. Citation: Capture of flag of the 10th
Virginia Infantry.
Note: The history of the 138th PA indicates that Companies A,
C, I and K were recruited in Montgomery County, Pa.. Therefore, while
Cpl. Connell was the only member of the Regiment to receive the Medal of
Honor; in the same report made by Gen. J. Warren Keifer, commanding the 2nd
Brigade, 3rd Division, Sixth Army Corps, which mentioned Cpl.
Connell, Gen. Keifer also stated: “I have the honor, as required by
orders, to forward the names of enlisted men, who, by their galanty and
good conduct, deserve rewards at the hands of those in
authority....Company I, 138th Pa Regt. Sergt. Maj. Osceola Lewis,
who was conspicuous for bravery and meritorious conduct on the 2d and 6th
instant. He rendered most valuable assistance to the commanding officer
of his regiment on the days above named. Color-Sergt. Charles R. Jones,
Company C, for bravery in waving the colors of his regiment in the face of
the enemy on the 6th instant, with a view to encourage the men
to attack.

County, Pa. Date of issue: 13 May 1899. Citation: With one companion
returned in the face of the enemy’s heavy artillery fire and moved to a
place of safety a severely wounded soldier who was left behind as the
regiment fell back.

Hartranft, John F.:

at: Norristown, Pa. Born: 16 December 1830, New Hanover Township,
Montgomery County, Pa. Date of issue: 26 August 1886. Citation:
Voluntarily served as an aide and participated in the battle after
expiration of this term of service, distinguishing himself in rallying
several regiments which had been thrown into confusion.
Johnson, Joseph E.:
First Lieutenant, Company A, 58th
Pennsylvania Infantry. Place and date: At Fort Harrison, Va., 29
September 1864. Entered service at:-----. Born: 5 February 1843, Lower
Marion, Montgomery County, Pa. Date of issue: 1 April 1898. Citation:
Though twice severely wounded while advancing in the assault, he
disregarded his injuries and was among the first to enter the fort, where
he was wounded for the third time.

Pennypacker,
Galusha:

Fisher, N.C., 15 January 1865. Entered service at: West Chester, Pa.
Born: 1 June 1844, Valley Forge, Pa. Date of issue: 17 August 1891.
Citation: Gallantly led the charge over a traverse and planted the colors
of one of his regiments thereon, was severely wounded.
