The American Civil War was extensively covered by the print media from both sides of the conflict, and by correspondents from around the world. Therefore, it truly became the first “media war.” As such, it was also the first war where many of the major figures involved repeatedly used the media to their personal or political advantage. After the war, the U.S. Government poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into creating the massive “The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies.” This monumental work, published between 1880 and 1901 comprised 127 volumes, plus a General Index and an accompanying Atlas, is well over 120,000 pages in length, and was meant to serve as the definitive reference source of original battle reports and correspondence from the Civil War. (This work was followed by The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion, which contains 30 volumes and was published between 1894 and 1922.) Unfortunately, during the process both works were repeatedly corrupted to serve the interests of both individuals and various regions of the county. Additionally, over the years writers, novelists, and historians have further confused what actually transpired before, during, and after the war in an attempt to rewrite history to serve their own purposes or simply to reflect the prevailing attitudes or beliefs of the times. As a result, there is as much information as there is disinformation regarding the American Civil War, and it is the responsibility of the scholar to determine where the truth shall lie.To this end, the following members and friends of the Union Library Civil War Round Table continue to donate books, compact disks, and video tapes to substantially increase the volume of reference material available at the Union Library. It is our hope that those who follow us and study this period in our history will have at their disposal as much information as we can make available to assist them in their pursuit of knowledge. To aid the scholar this material is listed by Author, and categorized by type of media. The name appearing in parenthesis after the title credits the donating member. Items are also noted as (A) Autographed Edition; (AD) Autographed Edition Dedicated to the Union Library; and (HF) Historical Fiction. Items shown in italics were destroyed on 16 June 2001 in a flood resulting from Tropical Storm Allison which caused the Pennypack Creek to overflow it’s banks. Catching the community by surprise, this storm truly resulted in a “one hundred year flood” and left in it’s wake six lost lives and a number of destroyed homes and properties. Through the kindness and generosity of other members, some of these lost volumes have been replaced from their private collections.
